1. Heck Announces Bid for Governor [Anjeanette Damon]


  • Former state Senator Joe Heck announced this morning that he will run for Governor of Nevada in 2010. Heck who lost his first reelection bid by 765 votes last year, is the second Republican to announce his candidacy against the Incumbent Gov. Jim Gibbons.
  • North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon has also said he will run for governor, but has done very little fundraising or outreach.

1. Reno Council Gives Stadium a Boost [RGJ]

  • With a 4-1 vote yesterday the Reno City Council agreed Wednesday to provide more redevelopment assistance to help build several nightclubs, restaurants and an entertainment plaza in front of the Reno Aces Ballpark.

1. Federal Spending Bill Brings Nevada $100 million [RGJ]

  • Nevada to get $100 million from a $410 billion spending bill that passed in the Senate 62-35. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., voted for the measure while U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., opposed it.

  • Both the majority and minority leaders of the Nevada Senate have criticized Gov. Jim Gibbons for his decision not to sign the room tax increase approved by the Legislature.

1. Senate on Room Tax Plan [NV Appeal]

  • Debate continues with the deadline fast approaching (Friday).

2. Reid & Daniel Bogden? [NV Appeal]

  • What is going on between these two? There is definitly more to this story that we haven't heard about yet. Reid is trying to get Daniel Bogden's job back as U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

3. Adding $5 to Marriage License? [NV Appeal]

  • SB14 would add $5 to the $20 fee which the state adds to the license fees to fund domestic violence programs. The fee increase would generate $615,000 a year, which would only close about half of a $1.2 million gap needed to prevent staff cuts, reduced hours and center closures, Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence director Susan Meuschke said.

  • Senate to consider the room tax increase today. The measure would increase room tax by as much as 3 percent in Washoe and Clark counties.
