Former state Senator Joe Heck announced this morning that he will run for Governor of Nevada in 2010. Heck who lost his first reelection bid by 765 votes last year, is the second Republican to announce his candidacy against the Incumbent Gov. Jim Gibbons.
North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon has also said he will run for governor, but has done very little fundraising or outreach.

With a 4-1 vote yesterday the Reno City Council agreed Wednesday to provide more redevelopment assistance to help build several nightclubs, restaurants and an entertainment plaza in front of the Reno Aces Ballpark.

1. Federal Spending Bill Brings Nevada $100 million [RGJ]

Nevada to get $100 million from a $410 billion spending bill that passed in the Senate 62-35. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., voted for the measure while U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., opposed it.

2. Room Tax Increase Passes [NV Appeal]

The vote was 16-5 in favor after a lengthy debate on the Senate floor.

3. Gibbons Criticized by Both Parties [NV Appeal]

Both the majority and minority leaders of the Nevada Senate have criticized Gov. Jim Gibbons for his decision not to sign the room tax increase approved by the Legislature.

What is going on between these two? There is definitly more to this story that we haven't heard about yet. Reid is trying to get Daniel Bogden's job back as U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

3. Adding $5 to Marriage License? [NV Appeal]

SB14 would add $5 to the $20 fee which the state adds to the license fees to fund domestic violence programs. The fee increase would generate $615,000 a year, which would only close about half of a $1.2 million gap needed to prevent staff cuts, reduced hours and center closures, Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence director Susan Meuschke said.

1. Taxes Reviewed at Legislature [RGJ]

Citizens, business owners and policy experts discuss Nevada's tourist-dependent tax system at the Legislature. Gov. Jim Gibbons releases statement directed towards the Legislature stating they should, “provide Nevada citizens with a clear indication of whether they intend to raise taxes to resolve the budget crisis.”

I'm glad I don't have to drive this commute, it looks awful. It will be interesting to follow up on this story though because it is going to be a major makeover for the sparks community.

3. Rep. Franks Says He Was Wrong [NV Appeal]

Oh the justice! After reporting this story in Wednesday's round-up we can follow-up with Rep. Trent Franks, R-Arizona, saying he was wrong on when on the Fox Newsroom earlier this week.
"Barker, Franks’ spokeswoman, said in statement the congressman did not know Reid, D-Nev., supported two different railroad proposals. She would not say if Franks will apologize."

Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, is questioning his own leader Jim Gibbons. He's worried about the effect the budget will have on tourism. A drop in tourism means less money for the economy and less money for the economy means we are in this mess a lot longer than need be, because of...the Governor's budget.

I am pleased to announce that I will be attending the Reno City Council meetings that are held every other Wednesday.

On the following Thursday's after the meetings I will run a piece on this blog about the event.

Sparks City Council meets on Monday's and I will report on this meeting on Tuesday's.

My goal is to allow my readers to feel like they were at the meeting and have them come away from my piece with a better understanding on what business is taking place at these City Council meetings.

The 2009 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner being held at the Carson Nugget on March 19th will have former Assembly Speaker Joe Dini of Yerington and current Speaker Barbara Buckley of Las Vegas as its keynote speakers.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell of Carson City will be the featured guest.

Sparks - State of the City

Mayor of Sparks Geno Martini gave his state of the city speech on Monday.

He discussed unemployment and foreclusure rates along with some interesting tid-bits that covered the Truckee River Whitewater Park at Rock Park and Golden Eagle Regional Park & Sports Complex. He told residents to not be afraid to "spend a little money." He also talked about how residents can help out by volunteering for the police volunteer program and picking up "trash, debris, and tree limbs" alongside sidewalks.

Welcome! This blog has one purpose and that is to keep you informed on Reno, Carson City, and all around Nevada politics. I will offer a round-up of important news articles from various sources and sometimes add commentary. I also hope to talk to the politicians themselves and talk with the teams around Reno that work to get our officials elected. You will discover that there are a great many Nevada politics websites however there is no one place to go to get local news and explanation about Reno! I will be adding a historical page, links to useful and informative pages about Nevada, and calendars to events in Reno that will shape our city's future.
